3 Habits of Successful Online Seminary Students

Pursuing a degree online has its advantages and benefits. Being able to work around your family or professional schedule is sometimes the key to being able to pursue an education at all. But it is also true that online degree programs have challenges as well. The good news is that there are many who came before you who have shared their wisdom and the keys to their success.

Here are three great habits you can implement today to give yourself your best chance at success.

Manage Your Time

Online degree programs are unique in that you can “go to class” at any time of the day. When you have so much freedom and flexibility it can be extremely easy to procrastinate. Set yourself a schedule and stick to it! Even if it means that you have to snag an hour of study time in the morning before work, do it, because in the end it will be worth it.

Be Organized

Good organization goes a long way towards success. After all, it doesn’t do much good to do the work if you can’t find it on your hard drive when the time comes to turn it in! Keep drafts and final copies in an easy-to-find location on your computer or flash drive. If it helps, you can also make a spreadsheet to keep track of your assignments and due dates.

See the Big Picture

Always keep in mind why you have decided to attend online Christian college. If you are pursuing a degree and career in ministry, it’s important to synthesize what you learn so that you can call upon your knowledge when you need it later on. In other words, don’t just study for the assignments and tests; study knowing that the work you do now will make you a better church member and leader in the future.

As always, remember that you aren’t in it alone. Communicate with people you trust and stay close to your support system. If you are feeling the stress, ask them to pray for you, and don’t forget that Colorado Theological Seminary has a mentor dedicated just to you! Stay focused and trust God’s plan for you–He’s got your back!
